Our primary goal is to simplify the VCE assessment process and make it more accessible to both teachers and students. We understand the stress and uncertainty that often accompanies Unit 3 and Unit 4 exams, and we're here to change that.

WHO

Meet Ryan and Nicola, our dedicated experts.

 

Ryan, with 14 years of VCE teaching and 11 years in VCE resource development, is a true field expert. As a VCAA Assessor for Business Management and Economics and a Melbourne Graduate School of Education Lecturer, his commitment to education is unmatched. His contributions to top Victorian schools and his involvement with the VCTA Advisory Group for Economics demonstrate his passion and dedication to the teaching profession.


 

Nicola, a qualified Doctor with over a decade of experience in the healthcare sector, shares a deep passion for quality education and supporting students' aspirations. Her background in medical research and healthcare complements her role at Learn Lab Au, where she combines her writing skills with her commitment to education.

Co-Founder

Ryan Shave

A dedicated educator, Ryan has committed his professional life to the learning experiences of his students. Always looking for new ways to help, Ryan co-founded Learn Lab Au to support students and teachers across Victoria.

 

Ryan’s experience spans 14 years teaching VCE units, 11 years developing VCE resources, and 7 years as VCAA Assessor for Business Management and Economics units. He has also taken on a Lecturer role with Melbourne Graduate School of Education, inspiring student-teacher candidates.

 

A current member of the VCTA Advisory Group for Economics, Ryan has been recognised for his performance at top Victorian schools by students and their families, teachers, and Principal-class leaders. Ryan is praised by his peers for his passion and energy, and he is now channelling these qualities to bring Victorian students and teachers Learn Lab Au’s high-end resources.

Todd Zadow

With over a decade in secondary education including leadership roles across wellbeing and curriculum, Todd is passionate about delivering the best academic outcomes for students as well as promoting student engagement and school connectedness.

 

Todd completed his honours degree in science (psychology) in 2010, followed by a masters degree in secondary teaching. He has since completed a PhD in education, convened tertiary courses in motivational psychology, presented at international conferences, and is the founder of educational YouTube channel HighSchoolScience101. Initially established as a means of creating and sharing simple science explanations for his own students, his channel has gained over 4 million views across 50 different countries, has 8 science lessons that are in the top 10 most viewed on YouTube for their topic, and has been ranked in the top 100 science channels globally.

 

Todd specialises in teaching middle school science, as well as Japanese, psychology and biology. He has led year levels, school houses and science departments, and is excited to be working with Learn Lab Au to share his classroom resources and experience with other ardent educators.

Psychology Writer and Tutor

Alexandra Simpson

Alex is a dynamic and energetic teacher who lives and breathes Psychology. In addition to her 8 years’ experience teaching VCE, she has presented at the CDES annual Psychology Teacher Conference on numerous occasions, and has 5 years’ experience as VCAA Assessor.

 

Alex holds the wellbeing in education close to her heart. As such, she commits to supporting students holistically. Her approach has resulted in year-on-year above-40 study scores in Psychology, and two perfect study scores of 50 in 2019 and 2021. Combining her passion for wellbeing and psychology, Alex moves students to achieve their best, making her invaluable to Learn Lab Au.

P.E Tutor

Leigh Parsons

Leigh has led more than a decade of classes to outperform in his time as a PE teacher. In 2021 and 2022, his classes achieved a median study score of 43 and 41 respectively, with 3 students receiving a perfect study score of 50. Leigh not only works well with high-achieving students, but inspires students in the median category to push for the elite.

 

Recognised for his excellence in teaching, Leigh is one of the most sought-after Physical Education teachers in Victoria. His passion, extensive knowledge, and ability to connect with students makes him a tremendous asset to Learn Lab Au and VCE students.

Co-Founder

Nicola

Nicola holds a real passion for high quality education, access to education support, and providing opportunities for students to pursue their professional dreams. These firm values led her to co-found Learn Lab Au.

 

A qualified Doctor with more than a decades' experience in the medical health sector, Nicola brought together her passions for writing and healthcare to author medical research articles now published in well-respected medical journals. Currently completing training in Emergency Medicine, Nicola is further supported by a Master of Surgery and a Bachelor of Arts in English.

 

Nicola has been Learn Lab Au’s floating guru, taking expert leadership over creative direction, administration, and all ad hoc curve-balls. She has also engaged with schools to finesse Learn Lab Au’s services and fine-tune how it supports Victorian teachers and students.

Business Management Writer & Reviewer

Mia Haravitsidis

A teacher with genuine passion, Mia holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Master of Secondary Teaching. After just one year in education, Mia became a VCAA Assessor for Business Management, was invited to present at VCTA’s Comview Conference, and established The Student Space podcast for high school students.

 

Mia was recognised for her high academic achievements whilst completing her Master degree, having received the Norman Curry Scholarship and been placed on the Dean's Honours List. At the same time, she co-designed a workshop in collaboration with the University of Melbourne.

 

Mia's vision is to inspire the next generation on how to navigate life throughout and beyond their high school years. Learn Lab Au is immeasurably lucky to have her fresh perspective on education on-side.

Legal Studies Writer & Reviewer

Ally Richards

With a love for Legal studies stemming from her own school and University Studies, Ally holds a Bachelor of Legal Studies, Graduate Diploma of Secondary Education and a Masters of Educational Leadership. This has enabled her to expand her teaching capabilities, and deliver high quality, tailored teaching to all of her students. 

Combined with her 11 years of experience teaching VCE Legal Studies at both APS and High Performing schools, Ally has been a VCAA assessor for the past 7 years, and has both created resources and presented for VCTA. 

In the last three years, Ally has also been involved in the Education faculty at Victoria university, primarily working with Commerce pre service teachers, inspiring and educating them.

Having assisted countless students score 45+ in Legal Studies, Ally is excited to be able to share some helpful tips and hints for other teachers, and contribute to the broader commerce community.

Chemistry Writer

James Rollinson

James is originally from the UK and previous to Australia, was Head of Chemistry and Head of Science at a UK school. 

He arrived in Australia in 2015 and took up role as head of Chemistry at Ballarat Clarendon College, overseeing a significant upturn in Chemistry results for the school. 4 years as a VCAA Chemistry assessor to date. He has written chemistry and science resources for the Oxford University Press and is now working on the Bellarine Peninsula teaching Chemistry and General Maths VCE. James has also worked in private Chemistry tuition for over 20 years helping students gain excellent results.
